We catch up with Cornwall based artist Steve Read about his paintings of picturesque locations around the world.
Early beginnings…
“My earliest memories (of art) were of sitting with huge colouring in books. I have always found drawing and painting relaxing, it helped empty my mind of negative thoughts. I would spend hours alone drawing with coloured pencils, copying the crushed coke cans from early 1980's poster shop Athena. I left school at 16 and studied Graphic Design at Falmouth school of Art and Design. 4 years later I moved to London for work.”
Love of Cornwall
“My parents moved down to Cornwall when I was 2. I knew of many local artists from the St Ives and Newlyn areas. My influence was the vintage posters that depicted a vision of rural and coastal bliss, away from the rat race. I try to recapture the essence of this work - timeless and tranquil. I try to create calm.”

“I would like to think that my work will complement most interior schemes. My colour palettes are often influenced by modern textile design and heritage paint collections. I can find myself picking up the odd cushion or interior magazine for inspiration. I like colours that are not too obvious, but lived in!”
“Because of growing up in Marazion, I warm towards this piece (Marazion). Although I do quite like the simplicity of New York with the bridge and silhouette buildings. My fondest memories would be walking along the beaches with my dad after a storm, to see what had been washed up.”
