Modern Bedroom Ideas to Instantly Update the Home

According to the rules of Feng Shui, the bedroom is the most important room in the house. This is because we spend around a third of our lives sleeping. So the place where this happens – where we wind down at the end of each night and enter into the stages of rest – needs to be a calming sanctuary. If you only redecorate one room this year, make it the bedroom. By giving your bedroom a much-needed makeover, you can set the tone for the rest of your interiors, instantly updating your home. Plus, a beautiful boudoir means starting your day right every single morning.

Tired, outdated walls or bedding from another lifetime don’t exactly convey relaxation. If you want to transform your bedroom into a serene and tranquil paradise, hit the refresh button with new wallpaper, a change of colour scheme and some soft furnishings. You don’t always have to rip up the floor and replace every piece of furniture to get a sense of renewal.

Need some inspo? Here are some modern bedroom ideas to get you started…

Create modern romance with old florals

This is the perfect marriage between classic and contemporary. Taking a traditional flower and giving it a modern edge, this beautiful  Purple Roses wallpaper brings a sense of comfort and familiarity to your home. But styled with a mix of wood, metal finishes and soft colours, a seemingly time-honoured pattern can feel very current and up-to-date.

Because florals are totally timeless, this is one of the easiest modern bedroom ideas to get right. It’s an easy transition too for anyone who has always played it safe with traditional wallpapers and furnishings. Don’t be afraid to go dark and moody with the flowers on your wall. Dark floral prints are a major trend right now. When you strike the right balance with darkness and lightness, you can keep your space looking airy and spacious.

Ooze industrial chic with a touch of pink

There’s been a lot of buzz around the concrete trend in recent years, but the unfinished look doesn’t always have to be cold and utilitarian. It can also be warm, elegant and even romantic. This pretty Pale Pink Concrete wallpaper is the perfect example of ‘warehouse meets boudoir‘, adding a raw yet calming element to the room. While it’s got the coolness of the concrete, it’s far from cold.

Touches of pink or other warm hues can bring industrial themes to life. You can be as minimalist or as luxe as you like when it comes to fabrics, upholstery and decorative items.

The original trend was born in the loft apartments of 1970s New York, which were renovated from old warehouses. Key materials used back then were metal, concrete, iron, wood and brick. Over the years, this trend has developed but still remains true to its core masculine materials. But feel free to add your own feminine touches for a beautifully balanced bedroom.

Adopt the tropical trend for a feeling of ‘newness’

Another way to freshen up your interiors is by tapping into the most current print trends. Tropical inspired walls, like this Whisper Jungle wallpaper by Twisted Pixels, have a contemporary look to bring your space up to date. Despite what many people think, bright tropicals don’t always have to steal the show.

Muted tropical patterns like this one are a softer alternative to some of the bright jungle and palm wallpapers that are popular in homes. Mixed with the right colour palette, tropicals can be soothing and calming. They can help bring the outdoors in without hogging the limelight. Giving you a haven of stillness and calmness, perfect for just you and your thoughts.

Modern bedroom ideas that experiment with beautiful abstract patterns

If you’re looking for uber-modern bedroom ideas that celebrate colour and inspire creativity, an abstract wallpaper can generate instant wow and intrigue. At the same time, abstracts don’t have to be overly loud or distracting. This colourful Vision of Abstract wallpaper is both stimulating and calmative.

Not everyone sees their bedroom as a place just for sleep. Others may see it as a personal place to get lost in abstract thoughts, a space to read, write or compose, or an area of their home that matches their personality. Unlike communal spaces, a bedroom is very personal to you. So if you don’t want to follow the rules of muted colours and subtle patterns – then don’t. This is your sanctuary to customise. But to avoid distraction over-stimulation, try the art of compromise.

If you opt for big prints, harmonise with gentle colours. If you choose eye-popping brights, neutralise with a more delicate design.

Channel Nordic nuances with an art mural

This beautiful Bright Future II wall mural design is the epitome of modernism and is one of the fastest ways of updating a dull bedroom wall. Art is a great way of adding personality to your home and calming colours such as blue and soft gold are perfect for the bedroom. You’ll be switching off and escaping the stresses of work or family life in no time.

Scandinavian minimalist trends are evolving fast. Stark white walls and grey furniture are no longer the only ways to channel Nordic styles. If you’re looking to update a minimalist room that somehow feels outdated, add a splash of (muted) colour and some awe-inspiring artwork.

Dedicate your modern bedroom ideas to the seasons

The different seasons of the year mean something different to everybody. Perhaps the quietness of winter relaxes you, the first rain showers of spring, a warm summer sunset or the autumnal hues and falling leaves. Whatever it is that makes you feel calm, safe, and at home, it should be channelled into your interiors.

We love this Into the Blue wallpaper. It brings together one of the most soothing colours with the first blossoming buds of spring. The stunning design looks great in any modern bedroom setting and it represents all things healthy, happy and full of life.
