Get your Home Interiors Ready for Winter

We spend a lot more of our time indoors during winter; cosy nights watching television in front of the fire, having relatives over to visit or, just taking shelter from the cold! That’s why it’s so important to make ourselves as comfortable as possible over the next coming months. Winter is one of the most exciting seasons in home interiors and there are plenty of easy ways to achieve a seasonal look for your home, quickly - no matter what budget you’re working with.

Here are some easy ways to transform your home for the winter season.

Faux fur

Fur is timeless and can be brought out winter, after winter for years to come. Adding a fur throw or fur accessories such as rugs, cushions or blankets will instantly celebrate winter in any room. Consider placing your throw (or throws if you really feel the chill this winter) on seating areas, beds or surfaces in any room of the house. Even though decoration is important, one of the most crucial things that your home must do over winter is keep you warm - fur throws are perfect for this too!

Rich colour

Just because the weather outside may look a little dull, it doesn’t mean that your home should follow suit. Surround yourself and your family with rich winter colours to liven up your home. Deep shades of reds, blues, greens and purples will infuse your home with colours fashionable for the winter months. To bring a splash of colour in keeping with a neutral scheme, try using silvers and golds instead.

Shearling

If you want to add a cosy feel with an edge to your home, try using shearling throws and rugs instead of fur. They will provide you with the same warmth and seasonal spirit as furs and will create something slightly different to the usual winter decor.

Layers

Autumnal and winter layers aren’t just fashionable apparel, they work in the home too. For one quick step to winter decor, try layering up your living room or bedroom accessories with throws, blankets, rugs and cushions of different sizes and textures.

Rustic

Nothing says winter like bare trees and woodland. Pick up dark and medium wood furnishings to instantly give your home a rustic appeal. To really transform a room, a forest themed wall mural will change even the most plain rooms into works of art. A carefully selected investment like this will also transition between seasons.

Tartan

Just like faux fur, tartan patterns will continue to make a return to fashion winter, after winter. Add patterned rugs, blankets or small accessories to any room to bring in the season.

Candles

Many of us have candles around the house all year round. To winterise your selection think about colour, size, scent and shape. Purchase candles in the deep shades (reds, blues, greens and purples)  mentioned earlier on in the post and consider buying scents associated with the time of year (cinnamon, gingerbread etc). Add in the layering trend by choosing candles of different shapes and sizes.

Pay attention to dining

Your dining space will probably get a lot more action during winter than throughout the rest of the year, with nights in and visits from friends and family. That’s why seasonal tableware is a must for anyone looking to spruce up their decor for winter. Try Marks & Spencer home and furniture for great quality dining room accessories with a premium feel.

Textures

Mixing textures is a great way to achieve that cosy feeling in any room. Try combining a mixture of velvet, fur, shearling and wool with your regular decor to achieve this look.

Prepare for Guests

A lot of us spend one hectic week (or sometimes even day) hurriedly preparing for seasonal guests in the run up to Christmas. Transform your home early with a few essentials to give yourself a kick start in time for when the inevitable rush happens. Consider some items that will make staying at your home a seamless experience for guests, such as spare blankets, guest slippers and robes, a coat stand or boot rack for the entrance of your home, or a new welcome mat.

Budget upgrade

If you’re looking to upgrade your home for the new season, invest in a few new staple accessories. With shops like Primark, Wilkos and even H&M selling home accessories at a cheap price, giving your home a quick upgrade throughout for less than £50 is easy. Items such as new lampshades, cushions, bathroom accessories and rugs with a winter theme can really spruce up a room. To quickly glamorise, think of materials such as sequin, glitter and velvet.

Kitchen

The kitchen can be a tough place to run a winter theme through. Think about using the wall space to hang lights or decorations and using wintery scents.
